New software put in place to reduce cyclist collisions

The number of people in the UK commuting by bicycle or simply riding them for pleasure is on the up, which, despite the positive affect of cutting congestion, has spurred an unprecedented wave of accidents as bikes and vehicles collide.

The number of people in the UK commuting by bicycle or simply riding them for pleasure is on the up, which, despite the positive affect of cutting congestion, has spurred an unprecedented wave of accidents as bikes and vehicles collide.

As a result of these recent figures, a software developer has devised a unique satnav system aimed at reducing the accident and fatalities toll. The device is believed to be the world’s first in-cab system that automatically alerts drivers to areas where there is a high chance of collisions with cyclists, through emitting an audible and visible alert. The ‘high risk’ zones are based on areas where the convergence of the two user groups raises the likelihood of accidents.

Safety experts say that such a system is long overdue and cycle campaigners have welcomed the new satnav with open arms, claiming it offers riders and drivers even more protection on the roads.
