A young boy from London is recovering from his injuries after a cycling accident on Hampstead Heath.

A police source explained the boy was riding someone else’s BMX bike was not riding on a designated path when the accident happened.

Friends called the emergency services when it emerged that their friend was slipping in and out of consciousness.

The London Air Ambulance was called to the scene in order to air-lift the boy to hospital, landing just meters from the spot where the crash happened.

The teenage boy was put on a stretcher and flown to Royal London Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

An eye witness reported the events following the accident:

“He and his friends had come over to ask me about kite-flying and then only a few minutes later I saw the helicopter flying towards the Heath which made me think something serious was going on.”

“When I got there I saw his friends down by the crash site and they seemed pretty shocked.

“He had probably fallen into a little dip in the ground and been thrown off his bike – it’s a very uneven surface there.

The local Police have since encouraged all riders to stay on the designated path and where appropriate safety gear.
