Winton Police confirm re-launch of annual cycling safety campaign

Winton Police have confirmed that they are re-launching their annual campaign to tackle dangerous cycling on pavements without lights.

Over the past 14 days, officers have patrolled hotspots in Wimborne Road and Talbot Road where a number of £30 fixed fine penalties have been used for cyclists riding without front lights.

To encourage the purchase of light use, the fines are dropped if the rider can prove that they have the correct lighting on their bike within a week.

A spokesperson for the force said, “It is one of the key local priorities we have picked up from residents’ meetings.

“Our aim here is to educate people to ride safely rather than having to enforce constantly. I am a keen cyclist myself so I understand the dangers

A local resident who had been pulled over for not having lights on his bike said, “This is a pretty good idea because I will certainly be buying some now, rather than pay the fine.”

Cycle Assist recommend that you always use a good clear front and rear light when you are cycling at night or in low-visibility conditions. You may also be interested in reading our cycling at night tips page to brush up on your riding.
