A specialist unit for St Johns Ambulance has taken to the streets this week to reduce response times in heavily congested areas. The Cycle Response Unit will be used for a number of different events across the county of Cornwall to help existing first aid units that operate on foot or in ambulances. The bikes will enable the teams to travel to locations quickly where it would take too long, or be too difficult for ambulances and foot units to get to. The bikes are kitted out with a state-of-the-art collection of life saving equipment including oxygen and defibrillators to enable immediate care and attention to ill and injured members of the public. The volunteers must complete a training course before they are allowed to get behind the bars, and most will have to have advanced qualifications in First Aid. Stefan Antoniuk, County Commissioner of Operations explained more about the new units; “The Cycle Response Unit is a valuable addition to the services we can offer to people who are running public events. “They are very useful where large crowds are expected as that can hinder a land ambulance in getting to a casualty. They are also useful at rural events as they can reach areas quickly where vehicles can’t. “The unit is already proving popular with our members and we expect to see them out and about in Cornwall a lot this year.” “The unit is already proving popular with our members and we expect to see them out and about in Cornwall a lot this year.”
