Spanish cyclist, Inaki Lejarreta killed in accident with car

The Spanish cycling federation has confirmed that former mountain bike champion Inaki Lejarreta was killed in a cycling accident which involved a motor vehicle this weekend. 

The federation said that the 29-year-old was out riding on Sunday in the town of Lurreta in the northern Basque region when the accident happened.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene after several attempts to resuscitate him. 

Lejarreta competed in the 2008 Olympic games and won several medals in the Spanish national cross country championships throughout his career including silver in 2011 and bronze in 2007 and 2012.

A spokesperson from a cycling accident compensation specialist said, “Accidents like these are unfortunate and prove how dangerous the roads can be for riders.”

“We encourage all cyclists to wear a helmet and hi-vis clothing at all times. Lights are also a must for riding at night.”
