A festival in Islington and Hackney was recently cancelled after the first race due to an unrelated cycling accident.

The festival was a tri-borough event in partnership with Islington and Hackney councils. Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for the environment, said: “This festival was a great success, attracting visitors from nearby counties and children from across London.“This just shows how much scope there is for getting more people cycling for fun and to keep fit.”

While enjoying the fun aspects of the festival, some more serious matters were also addressed: 75 people took turns to sit in the cab of a large truck to see first-hand how hard it can be for drivers of large vehicles to see cyclists, reinforcing the importance of taking extra care when cycling near big vehicles.

Among many activities was the Rollapaluza, where two people race each other on static bikes, which attracted 72 racers.

Dr Bike managed to fix 120 cycles for free at the special stand in the park and the police Safer Neighbourhood Teams marked 99 bikes to help protect them against theft.

As well as wonky fun bikes, games and cycling information, were some rather grand cycles, including one disguised as a piano, which attracted plenty of attention.

More than 150 cyclists also registered for the criterium races, which unfortunately had to be cancelled after the first race due to an unrelated cycling accident.
