The New York Police Department (NYPD) have confirmed that they will begin recording all accidents involving cyclists.
New rules that have been introduced require the police to fill out a full accident report when an accident involving a bike is witnessed.
Many are unsure what the motivation behind the changes are, but a spokesperson for the NYPD said: “This reporting process will allow the department to track bicycle accidents like typical car accidents.”
As expected, the move has been critised by local cycling organisations.
Transportation Alternatives spokesperson Michael Murphy said “Every crash is worth taking seriously and bicyclists who behave recklessly deserve to be held accountable.
“But the NYPD continues to give dangerous drivers free reign, despite the fact that dangerous drivers are killing and injuring so many people.”
