They say that those involved in cycling accidents, or found to be the cause of an accident could be forced to pay bills in the thousands if they are not properly covered.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned that cycling without comprehensive insurance cover could prove costly.

They say that those involved in cycling accidents, or found to be the cause of an accident could be forced to pay bills in the thousands if they are not properly covered.

Malcolm Tarling of the ABI said: “If you are a cyclist and you are involved in an accident and you are at fault for causing it you could be sued for damages.”

“If you are cyclist you should always have some form of liability insurance. It is essential.”

The Department of Transport has this year published that the first 6 months of the year saw a 12% rise in cycling accidents compared to the same period last year, and that bike use is up 20% since the early 90s.

London has also seen a spate of fatal cycling accidents this month forcing mayor Boris Johnson to investigate the design of HGV vehicles and tipper trucks that drive in England’s Capital.
