New Walk cycling banCyclists in Leicester have made a fresh plea to have the bike ban on New Walk path lifted over safety fears.

Riders have complained that surrounding roads have now become too dangerous to cycle along..

Currently there is a £30 fine waiting for any cyclist that choses to ride along the 18th century thoroughfare, but there has been a fierce long-running battle over its usage.

“I get a bit fed-up of people making the case that New Walk has been traffic free since 1790,” said Roger Lovell, co-founder of Leicester charity Cyclemagic.

“In 1790, there was no traffic other than horses and carts.

“The volume of traffic on busy roads like London Road and Welford Road is huge and it’s no surprise there are a lot of injuries.

“New Walk offers the perfect solution for cyclists trying to get into the city centre from the south.

However a local resident said that letting cyclists on the path could be a disaster:

“It could work, but it would depend on how the cyclists chose to behave”.

“Perhaps 90 per cent of them would ride responsibly but the others would cause chaos,” she said. “It happens most days anyway – people flout the rules and ride down here.”

Cyclists and campaigners are now waiting to hear from the council to see if any changes will be made.
