Cyclist Wouter Weylandt has tragically died following a cycling crash in the third stage of the Giro d’Italia. The rider fell during a high-speed decent about 25km from the finish. He lay motionless and covered in blood after the accident and paramedics rushed to the scene, performing CPR and cardiac massage but to no effect. “Despite immediate treatment there was nothing we could do,” a doctor on the scene later told Italian television. “He died from a fracture to the front of his skull. We arrived at the scene 30 seconds after the crash. We tried for 40 minutes to resuscitate him.” Cyclists from around the world have already begun to pass on their sentiments via the popular social networking channel Twitter, including seven-time Tour De France champion, Lance Armstrong: “I’m shocked and saddened. May he rest in peace,” he said. For more on the story please visit the BBC’s website here.
