A cyclist who was knocked off his bike by a motorist is now fighting for compensation to fund his rehabilitation.

The rider broke his collarbone, shoulder, leg and 6 of his ribs in the incident.

He has also attacked the lenient sentence the driver was given by the courts. The 40-year-old was struck from behind as he cycled through Milford in Surrey by a driver who was traveling at 42mph in a 30mph area.

In June the driver was convicted of driving without due care and attention and was fined £285, ordered to pay £85 costs and given six points on his driving licence.

“One minute I was cycling along a road I know very well and the next thing I knew I woke up in a hospital bed covered in tubes and in agony,” the accident vicitim explained.

“Thankfully other motorists explained to the police what had happened so the driver could be prosecuted but I am disappointed with his punishment given that I nearly died and my life has completely changed.”

The cyclist has now pleaded to all drivers in the area to stick to the speed limits and to stay aware.

Recent figures show that cycling related deaths reached 108 this year, which is almost 1 per week.
