Cyclist in critical condition after cycling accident with car

A woman who suffered serious head injuries when she was involved in a cycling accident is in a critical condition in hospital. 

The rider, who is believed to be in her 50s, was taken to York hospital by ambulance following an accident yesterday in Bishopthorpe road. 

A spokesperson from the Police said that the cyclists was heading towards York when she ran in to the back of a black Saab which was parked with no passengers inside.

She was wearing a cycling helmet at the time. 

Members of the public came to the aid of the rider until the ambulance arrived, but none of them witnessed the accident. 

The road was shut for a number of hours in each direction and traffic was diverted along nearby roads.

Police are now calling for anyone with information to come forward and help them with their investigation. Anyone with useful information has been asked to call 101.
