Road traffic accident on bypass between cyclist and van leaves man hospitalised

A serious accident between a van and a cyclist has left a 52 year old man seriously injured.  Emergency services responded to calls at approximately 6.15 pm about a road traffic accident between a cyclist and a silver Citroen van.  The mans injuries meant that he was hospitalised and in intensive care.

The accident occurred on a busy bypass where both parties were travelling at speed hence the serious nature of the accident.

Police, paramedic and ambulance crews attended the accident promptly and assessed the cyclists injuries and administered pain relief.  Roads were temporarily closed to allow the cyclist to be transported to the nearest hospital via road ambulance and also for accident investigators to assess the crash scene and interview witnesses.

The driver of the van is not thought to be hurt.
