Two cyclists had to be airlifted to hospital after being involved in a road traffic accident at midday on a rural road, which left two hospitalised with “life-threatening” injuries and another two cyclists hurt and needing medical attention. Police, paramedics and two air ambulance crews attended the accident to treat the injured parties.
The attending air ambulance doctor said: “A car was in collision with four cyclists near …, close to the …… junction, just before noon.
“Two casualties were flown by air ambulance to Queen’s Medical Centre in …….”
“Two of the cyclists had extremely serious injuries which were life threatening.”
“We do occasionally get called out to road incidents involving cyclists because …… is a very popular area for people to cycle.
“But it is very, very unusual for these incidents to involve this number of cyclists.
“The ambulance service, the doctors and the paramedics did a great job in helping to treat the casualties.”
The accident happened when four cyclists where cycling on a country road and at some point there was an incident involving a car which caused all the cyclists to fall off their bikes, leaving two needing emergency treatment. Due to the nature of their injuries and the location of the accident, an air ambulance was called to take them quickly to the nearest trauma hospital where one remains in critical condition.
A Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 11.52 am to a road traffic accident on ….. Road which involved a car and four cyclists.
“One of the cyclists was in a critical but stable condition. The driver of the car is not thought to be seriously injured.”
