Transport for London has invested in 11,500 green beam laserlights from Blaze in an attempt to provide more safety features to their cycle hire bikes.
According to Transport for London’s own figures, there have been nine cyclist deaths on the city’s roads in 2015, compared with 13 last year and the hope is that the laserlights, which will be fitted to all 11,500 hire bikes from early next year, will help to stop the increasing trend in fatalities.
The lasers work by focussing a green beam of light, in the shape of a bicycle , 6m in front of the cyclist. Transport for London have got some high profile sports personalities involved including Jessica Ennis-Hill, Jenson Button and Rory McIlroy who have taken part in a Star Wars-esque promo film to launch the scheme.
London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “We’re always looking to develop new and innovative ways to help people cycle around the capital more safely and these green lights will help all our cycle hire users to stay seen at night.”
Let’s hope the force will be with the cyclists as well!
