A report from by the Department for Transport found that cycling related casualties had risen by 13% compared to the same period last year. Actual figures show a jump from 621 to 700.

A spokesperson from the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety said, “Ministers must plan for this now – not after casualty rates rise even more.

“Overall, casualties for cyclists have risen in 10 of the last 13 quarters. This should be of great concern if we are to see more people cycling as a result of the Olympics effect. We need more people cycling more safely, not more at risk”

Jason Torrance from Sustrans, a charity which helps improve the safety of roads, also added, “These accident rates should ring another alarm bell at the top of government.

“Our Olympic success is no doubt going to inspire more of us to get out on two wheels. The government must prioritise making our roads safe for the most vulnerable users.”
