A cyclist has been left severely injured after a freak accident involving a pedestrian.

The 43-year-old was reportedly cycling down hill when a pedestrian walked out in to her path forcing her to swerve and lose control of her bike.

Police who were first on the scene said that the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

A spokesperson from the force said: “It looks as though she swerved to avoid a woman crossing the road southbound and just came off her bike and hit her head hard. It is a reminder that people should always wear a helmet.”

The cyclist was airlifted to King’s College Hospital in London in a ‘life-threatening’ condition, however this was quickly downgraded to ‘serious’ after medical attention.

A local resident who passed the scene shortly after the cycling accident said, “She [the cyclist] looked seriously ill. Paramedics worked on her while she was lying on the floor. She was then lifted into an ambulance.”
