Cycling Deaths in Dubai Fall After Police Confiscate Record Number of Bikes

Authorities in Dubai have reported a sharp decrease in cycling related deaths this year, however this has not come around thanks to improved awareness from drivers and bike riders, or from the introduction of new safety measures, but from police banning a record number of the two-wheelers.

More than 8,000 bikes have been confiscated this year and police say that as a result there has only been one fatal cycling accident in the first nine months of this year compared to 7 in the same time period last year.

Most were taken away for cycling on roads with a speed limit above 80km/h which has recently been made illegal.

The total number of accidents involving bikes has also dropped by around one third.

Cycling in Dubai has seen a huge surge over recent years as many see it as a cheap method of transport, particularly the poorer workers.
