Bradley Wiggings has won the Tour de Romandie title after an astonishing time trial to win Sunday’s 16.5km stage.
The Brit, who rides for Team Sky, started 9 seconds behind the Spanish leader Luis Leon Sanchez and had to change his bike early on after a mechanical problem.
However he dug deep and finished with a time of 28 mins and 56 seconds to win the stage by just 1 second and take the overall race by 12 seconds.
Wiggins was delighted with his victory and said: “It was a true test of a rider, it had a bit of everything in it plus a mechanical problem.
“I’m pleased with the way I handled that moment because a few years ago I might have thrown my toys out of the pram and chucked my bike down the ravine!
“It was a good test for the bigger races coming up and I’m delighted.”
Team Sky also won the event, finishing 2 mins and 16 seconds ahead of second place Astana and third place Movistar.
Dave Brailsford, head of Team Sky said: “Obviously Bradley is now demonstrating that he can perform at the highest level in these races, but I think more importantly, from my perspective, is I’m interested in how the overall team performs.”
